India had lost six wickets early, struggling in both the powerplay and middle overs, but Pandya counter-attacked with fearless hitting, finishing 59 not out off 28 balls, including six fours and four sixes. He began with towering sixes against Keshav Maharaj and targeted Anrich Nortje with a 17-run over, even stepping out to a 149kph delivery to drive it for four. Marco Jansen’s short balls failed to trouble him as Pandya raced to his sixth T20I fifty in just 25 balls, capping it with a ramped six over third man.

His late onslaught added 53 runs in the last five overs, while Nortje conceded 41 in four. Earlier, India struggled on a fresh red-soil pitch, losing Shubman Gill (4), Suryakumar Yadav (12), and Abhishek Sharma (17) inside seven overs, with Lungi Ngidi exploiting the conditions superbly. India’s selection also saw Jitesh Sharma preferred over Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube added as a like-for-like all-rounder.
