Uttarkashi cloudburst: Village washed away, 4 dead & several people missing after flash floods hit Uttarakhand

Cloudburst in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand: A major cloudburst in the Dharali village near Harshil Valley triggered flash floods and a landslide in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, washing away the village, leaving at least four dead and several people missing.

Rescue operations are underway as authorities scramble to assess the damage and search for the missing.

The cloudburst occurred in Kheer Gadh, and several people are feared to have been swept away in the flash floods that followed the calamity.

A cloudburst led to flash floods in the high-altitude villages of Dharali, with several houses being damaged or swept away in the raging waters, according to people in the area. The cloudburst took place in the catchment area of the Kheer Gadh, leading to the devastating floods, locals said.

About 10–12 people could be buried under the debris, Rajesh Panwar, a villager, told PTI. He said, “20–25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away.”

There was panic in villages in the area, with people scrambling for dry ground. Videos from the scene showed a torrent of water rushing down, with people screaming in panic.

There is likely to be further damage due to rising water levels in the Harshil area of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand Police said in a post on X, urging residents to stay away from rivers.

"Due to the rising water levels in Kheer Gadh in Dharali, Uttarkashi, reports of damage have been received in the Dharali market area. Police, Fire, SDRF, Army, along with other disaster relief and rescue teams, are engaged in relief and rescue operations at the scene," Uttarakhand Police said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the developing situation, saying rescue teams were en route to the affected village to assist civilians.

"I have been informed about a cloudburst incident in Dharali of Uttarkashi... We are working to rescue the people. Officials from the district administration, the Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF are trying to rescue people and save them," Dhami said.
