Restaurant in Bihar fined Rs 3,500 for not giving sambar with masala dosa

In a unique case, a local court in Bihar has ordered a restaurant owner to submit a fine of Rs 3,500 for not serving sambar with dosa. The court has ordered the restaurant owner to complete the payment within 45 days, otherwise an interest rate of 8 percent will be charged in case of delayed payment.

As per local reports, Manish Pathak, a lawyer, went to the eatery with his mother and ordered a Special Masala Dosa. The delivery order cost him Rs 140. But when he got home, he saw that the package was missing sambhar. Only dosa and sauce were available. The following day, Manish protested to the restaurant management.

To which, he rudely asked Manish if he would buy the entire restaurant for Rs 140. Angered by this, Manish sent a legal notice to the restaurant. However, restaurant owner didn't respond to the notice. After this, the lawyer filed a complaint with the District Consumer Commission. After an 11-month trial, the court found the restaurant guilty and ordered it to pay a fine to the consumer.


The commission imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the restaurant for causing mental, physical and financial hardship to the consumer and a separate fine of Rs 1,500 as litigation cost. It ordered the restaurant to pay the fine within 45 days. The court said that if the payment is not made on time, 8% interest will also have to be paid separately.

Expressing his satisfaction with the court's ruling, Pathak emphasized the importance of upholding consumer rights and ensuring businesses deliver on their promised services.
