Punjab Budget: State finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Sunday proposed the state budget with an outlay of Rs 2,60,437 crore for FY 2026-27. He named it the 'saari guarantiyan puri karan wala' budget, claiming that every promise made to the people of Punjab has been fulfilled.

"I stand before this august House with immense pride to state that rarely has a government, in the fifth year of its tenure, been able to say that every promise made to the people of Punjab has been fulfilled with confidence and credibility," he said.

This fifth budget of the AAP government marks a defining moment in our journey of governance, he said while presenting the budget. This marks the last budget of the AAP government in Punjab before it goes to state polls early in 2027.

"Our Government has ensured that these guarantees were not rhetorical assurances, but structured policy interventions backed by budgetary support, institutional reforms and measurable outcomes. That is why I am naming this Budget as "Saari Guarantiyan Puri Karan Wala Budget", said Cheema.

For FY27, the Punjab government projected its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to reach Rs 9,80,635 cr with a 10 per cent growth rate. Under Budget 2026, Cheema proposed a Rs 19,279 crore outlay for the education sector, with a 7 per cent hike over the previous budget.

On the other side, women leaders and workers of the Punjab Congress staged a protest in Chandigarh, demanding the state government fulfil its promise of providing financial assistance.

Congress leader and Punjab LoP Partap Singh Bajwa questioned the government on failing to give Rs 1,000 for 48 months under the scheme announced earlier.

He alleged that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann committed fraud saying they had promised that women would be given Rs 1,000 after forming the government and 48 months have already passed. "

They are making the announcement after 48 months. And the inside information we have from the government is that they will make this announcement today and the installments will start coming from August," he told ANI, adding that the AAP leader have also requested the BJP to prepone the elections by two to three months.

"The elections are likely to be in December, so this installment will be for two months, or at most three months, so fraud is being committed," he alleged.
