At least two people were killed and 20 injured when 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail (Train number 12810) derailed early Tuesday morning near Rajkharsawan railway station in Jharkhand after colliding with a goods train. Recently, Railways have been marred with a series of train accidents. This is the fourth train accident this year. The incident occurred around 3:45 am in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district, approximately 7 km from Rajkharsawan station, under the Chakradharpur railway division of South Eastern Railways, according to a statement from railway officials.

Train Manager South Eastern Railway, Md. Rehan says, "Around 3:39 am, the train got derailed and many people got injured in the incident...The incident happened as a Goods Train had already derailed in the downline and Howara-CSMT Express was moving at 120 kmph...The upline is affected"

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren instructed officials to assist the injured passengers immediately, stating, "Make immediate arrangements for the treatment of the injured," in a post on X.


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also commented on the accident, questioning the state of governance and criticizing the frequent railway accidents. "I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of the Government of India?" she said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

A spokesperson for South Eastern Railway confirmed the derailment, noting that 18 of the 22 coaches of the 12810 Howrah-Mumbai Mail via Nagpur derailed near Barabamboo station at 3:45 am.

The Jharkhand government has dispatched emergency response teams to the scene to assist with rescue and relief efforts. Indian Railways has issued multiple helpline numbers for Tatanagar (Jamshedpur), Chakradharpur, Rourkela, Howrah, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ranchi, and other locations.
