West Bengal begins border fencing; govt hands over 27-km stretch to Border Security Force
Kolkata: A high-level meeting on land transfer for the installation of barbed fencing near the Bangladesh border will be held in Kolkata on Wednesday evening between West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Border Security Force Director General Praveen Kumar, and other senior officials at Nabanna, the state secretariat. The West Bengal government is set to hand over land to the BSF in three areas across Bengal, including Malda-Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas district, Nadia and Cooch Behar, people in the know told ET.

The meeting will also be attended by the BSF ADG and IG, along with all senior state officials.

In the first phase, land will be transferred in three segments, including Malda and Murshidabad, which fall under the BSF South Bengal Frontier, and in South Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, which falls under the BSF South Bengal Frontier, sources told ET. However, the total amount of land to be transferred is yet to be confirmed. Malda, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts have the most porous borders in the state.

At the first Cabinet meeting of the newly formed West Bengal government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that land would be allocated within 45 days for the installation of barbed fencing near the Bangladesh border. The land would be handed over to the Border Security Force as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CM said.

The District Magistrate of North 24 Parganas, along with senior BSF officials, visited the bordering areas in North 24 Parganas’ Bongaon and other areas yesterday. A meeting was held on Monday at the district level in North 24 Parganas, where senior BSF officers, including the BSF IG and ADG, were present.

There was a border visit to Hakimpur, Tarali and Shikari in North 24 Parganas district, sources told ET. The land revenue officer of North 24 Parganas went to Hakimpur, Tarali and Shikari over land-related issues. Meanwhile, a senior DIG-rank officer had come to New Delhi and visited the bordering areas of North 24 Parganas. North 24 Parganas district’s Superintendent of Police was also part of the Border Out Post (BoP) visit in the district.
