Agnipath scheme announced
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has unveiled a new scheme called "Agnipath" for the recruitment of soldiers in the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The recruitment is largely on a short-term contractual basis.

Paradigm shift in recruitment
The "Agnipath" scheme, earlier called "Tour of Duty", was launched in the presence of the chiefs of the three services, shortly after the Cabinet Committee on Security approved it.

Agniveers on contractual basis
Under the scheme, Indian youngsters will be inducted in the armed forces as 'Agniveer'. This is initially for a period of four years and some of them would be retained.

Aim to cut salary & pensions bill
The new scheme was extensively deliberated on for two years. The aim is to cut the ballooning salary and pensions bill. The defence budget of Rs 5,25,166 crore for 2022-23 included Rs 1,19,696 crore for defence pensions.

Balance between youth and experience: Army chief
Army chief General Manoj Pande said the scheme aims to bring a paradigm shift in recruitment, and that it will help ensure optimum balance between youth and experience in the Army.

Wider talent pool for recruitment: Navy chief
Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar said the scheme will ensure a wider talent pool for recruitment in the armed forces. Women will also be inducted into armed forces under it, he said.
