New Delhi: The Income-Tax Department has launched an investigation into Trinamool Congress legislator Debasish Kumar over alleged discrepancies in the declaration of his assets, sources familiar with the matter said.

The I-T department conducted searches on April 17 at Kumar's properties and those of his associates, during which the authorities seized diamond jewellery, gold and bullion valued at around ₹1.75 crore, along with ₹6 lakh in cash from a business entity in which Kumar is a partner, the sources said.

Kumar has been re-nominated from his native Rashbehari assembly constituency in Kolkata.

A report detailing the findings has been submitted to the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. The searches were carried out based on allegations of generation and handling of unaccounted income.
