West Bengal elections: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee loses Bhabanipur to Suvendu Adhikari
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suffered a significant defeat in Bhabanipur, losing by 15,144 votes to Suvendu Adhikari. This marks Adhikari's second victory over Banerjee, following his win in Nandigram. Adhikari attributed his success...
Earlier, in 2021, Adhikari had defeated Banerjee in Nandigram. In Nandigram, Adhikari won with 9665 votes on Monday, defeating TMC’s Pabitra Kar. He was the only BJP candidate fighting in the twin seats.
“This is Narendra Modi’s victory. This is the victory of Hindutva. She was here till round 15 and when I started leading with 554 votes she left. CPI-M has transferred 15,000 votes to me and I thank CPM supporters. In Chetla, Bengalis and Hindus voted for me. Sikh, Gujarati and MLAs from Rajasthan and Gujarat MLAs have worked for me,” Suvendu Adhikari said after his victory.
“I have spoken with the Home Minister. He was concerned about Bhabanipur. The Muslims did not vote for me in Nandigram and thus my margin is less there. In Bhabanipur also, Muslims did not vote for me,” Adhikari said.
After the 20th round, Suvendu Adhiakri got 73,463 votes while Mamata Banerjee got 58,349 with a margin of 15,144.
When Mamata Banerjee came to power in Bengal in 2011, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya got defeated for the second time this time in his political career by over 16,000 votes to his former chief secretary Manish Gupta from the Jadavpur seat who was fielded by Trinamool, from where he had been winning on the trot since 1987.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had lost elections only once since he started contesting polls from 1977.
