West Bengal Congress is open to alliance with Left Front for by-poll in Bhabanipur: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

West Bengal Congress is in favour of fielding a candidate for the Bhabanipur assembly bypoll against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said on Monday.

West Bengal Congress is open to alliance with Left Front for a by-poll in Bhabanipur but has no intention to tie up with ISF, Pradesh Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, after an internal meeting of the party.

“The final decision will be taken by AICC in Delhi. We have sent our proposal to Delhi,” Chowdhury said while speaking to media persons.


Making a turnaround from his earlier stand, Adhir said the Left-Congress alliance intends to field a candidate against Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur. However, he had earlier said that the party will stay away from contesting from the seat.

“After discussing with party colleagues, we have decided to contest the seat. We will leave the Samsergunj and Jangipur seats to Left Front and support them in campaigns,” Chowdhury, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, said.

The Congress will campaign for the two seats in Samserganj and Jangipur if Left Front fields its candidates.

Both Congress and Left Front have severed their ties with ISF after its recent poll debacle in the recently held assembly polls in Bengal.
