BJP tsunami in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee loses Bhabanipur to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes
West Bengal basked in a saffron sunset on Monday as the tally of votes dawned on a monumental shift in the state's political landscape. Not only did the BJP manage to secure an overwhelming over 200 milestone mark in the Assembly elections, its LoP Suvendu Adhikar inflicted a deadly blow to TMC Supreme Mamata Banerjee in more ways than one.

In a performance that can only be described as a masterclass iBhabanipurl survival, Adhikari has emerged victorious from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur.

In Bhabanipur, Adhikari decrowned TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee from her bastion by 15,05 votes, while in Nandigram he defeated TMC’s Pavitra Kar by 9,665.

This double-barrelled win marks a watershed moment in Bengal’s history.

For Adhikari, the 2026 Assembly election was the ultimate "make or break" gamble—a choice to either cement his status as the primary challenger to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) or face political oblivion.

By winning Nandigram, his rural fortress, and Bhabanipur, the Chief Minister’s urban backyard, Adhikari has not just survived; he has conquered.

The battle of the titans

In Bhabanipur, Adhikari faced the most formidable opponent in the state: Mamata Banerjee.

This contest was the crown jewel of the 2026 elections, representing a psychological siege of the TMC’s nerve centre.

Adhikari’s win here is a blow to the TMC’s prestige, as the seat has been synonymous with the Chief Minister’s personal power for over a decade.

Meanwhile, in Nandigram, the battle was equally personal.

Adhikari faced off against his former aide, Pabitra Kar, who was fielded by the TMC specifically to dismantle Suvendu's "Son of the Soil" image.

Kar, who once worked under the Adhikari family’s organizational umbrella, was seen as the TMC’s best hope to prove that the people of Nandigram had moved on.

However, the final numbers suggest that Adhikari’s deep-rooted influence, forged during the 2007 anti-land acquisition movement, remains impenetrable.

These opponents mattered because they represented the institutional memory of the TMC—a memory Adhikari has now effectively overwritten with saffron ink.

A career defined by a bitter rift

Suvendu Adhikari’s political journey is a saga of calculated defiance.

Rising from a family of political heavyweights in Purba Medinipur, he was once the crown jewel of the TMC’s organizational machinery.

He was the architect of the party's rural expansion and played a pivotal role in the 2011 "Poriborton" that ended 34 years of Left Front rule.

The rift began with the ascent of Abhishek Banerjee, the Chief Minister's nephew, within the party hierarchy.

Feeling sidelined and wary of the "dynasty" politics he once fought against, Adhikari resigned his ministerial posts and joined the BJP in December 2020.

Since then, the TMC has labeled him a "traitor," while he has framed his move as a crusade to "save Bengal" from corruption and appeasement.

The "make or break" stakes

The stakes for 2026 were astronomical because of Adhikari's trajectory over the last two state elections.

In 2016, as a TMC candidate, he won Nandigram with a massive 67% of the vote.

In 2021, he achieved the "Himalayan feat" of defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram by a razor-thin 1,956 votes, though the TMC won the state.

Entering 2026, Adhikari had to prove that his 2021 win wasn't a fluke.

A loss in either seat would have been seen as a rejection of his leadership.

Instead, by doubling his stakes and winning both, he has silenced internal party critics and external rivals alike.Campaigning and Defying the Pollsters

Adhikari’s 2026 campaign was a relentless, high-octane marathon.

He focused heavily on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, claiming he had "cleaned" the lists of nearly 9 million "fake voters" to ensure a fair fight.

As the dust settles, Suvendu Adhikari stands as the undisputed champion of the 2026 polls. By winning from the fields of Nandigram to the streets of Bhabanipur, he hasn't just won two seats; he has claimed the mandate to lead Bengal into a new political era.
