How votes are counted
The counting process follows a strict, multi-layered protocol. Postal ballots are taken up first, after which votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are counted. Each constituency goes through multiple rounds of counting, with trends updated after every round. The returning officer declares the final result only after all rounds are completed and duly verified.
Security at counting centres is stringent, with strong rooms under constant surveillance and entry restricted to authorised officials and candidates’ representatives. While EVMs enable faster tabulation, mandatory verification procedures and round-wise counting ensure that the process continues through the day.
What exit polls predicted
Exit polls for the 2026 Assembly elections suggest a fragmented, state-specific outcome rather than a clear nationwide trend across Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry.
In West Bengal, most projections indicate a tight contest between the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, raising the possibility of a hung Assembly. A poll of polls places both parties close to the majority mark in the 294-member House, suggesting that even small vote swings could prove decisive. While some agencies project a BJP edge with around 150–175 seats, others point to a much narrower gap, keeping the contest wide open.
