Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday alleged that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act “was an effort to prevent scheduled castes and other backward communities from getting citizenship rights as infiltrators will be offended with ‘didi’ (if she backed CAA)”.Speaking at a rally in Basirhat South constituency, Shah said CAA will benefit people who migrated from Bangladesh due to religious persecution.

If voted to power, a BJP government will pay Rs 10,000 annually to such refugees through CM Refugee Welfare Scheme, he said. BJP has mentioned this in its manifesto. “After forming our government in Bengal, we will repeal the proposal against CAA passed in Bengal assembly,” Shah said.Raising the CAA issue in Matua dominated bordering district of North 24 Parganas, where infiltration is a major problem, he said BJP will stop infiltration through border.
