'The lotus now blooms from Gangotri to Gangasagar': PM Modi hails historic win in West Bengal
In a sweeping victory that marks the Bharatiya Janata Party’s first ascent to power in West Bengal, PM Modi struck a tone of triumph mixed with reassurance - promising development, stability, and an end to political violence in the state.

Addressing enthused party workers at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, the prime minister framed the mandate not merely as an electoral win, but as a turning point in Bengal’s political and social journey.

“From today, a new chapter is being written in Bengal’s history,” he declared, pledging that governance under the BJP would focus on “vikas and new aspirations walking together.”

The BJP supremo further outlined an ambitious roadmap: enhanced safety for women, employment opportunities for youth, and swift implementation of welfare schemes, including clearing the Ayushman Bharat health scheme in the very first Cabinet meeting.

“From today, a new journey will start in Bengal where vikas, new aspirations will walk together. I promise to all of West Bengal that for better future of the state, BJP will work day and night. In Bengal, women will be safe. In Bengal, youth will get jobs. In first Cabinet, Ayushman Yojana will get greenlit,” he added.

A mandate beyond numbers

The BJP’s victory comes on the back of a high voter turnout - nearly 93%, which PM Modi described as a “historic feat” and a sign that “not just democracy, but the Constitution and democratic processes have won.”

He credited women voters in particular for playing a decisive role in shaping the outcome.

While official tallies are still being finalised, trends indicate a decisive majority for the BJP with over 200 seats secured, marking a dramatic shift in a state long dominated by TMC forces.

Ending violence, invoking legacy

A key theme in the prime minister speech was the promise to end Bengal’s entrenched cycle of political violence.

Recalling past elections marred by unrest, he noted that this time voting remained peaceful, with no reported deaths.

“Who voted for whom—let’s move beyond that. Let’s work for Bengal,” he urged.

The PM also invoked Bengal’s cultural and ideological icons.

Remembering Rabindranath Tagore, he said the BJP would ensure a climate free of fear, where the state’s intellectual and cultural traditions can thrive.

He added that the victory would “soothe the soul” of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, linking the moment to the ideological roots of the party.

In a flourish of symbolism, PM Modi also revisited an earlier remark made after the Bihar elections, saying the political journey of the Ganga had now come full circle. “From Gangotri to Gangasagar, the lotus is blooming,” he said, underscoring the BJP’s expanding footprint.

Calling himself a “karyakarta among karyakartas,” the BJP leader credited grassroots workers for “rewriting history,” and described the victory as an announcement of “India’s future of hope” - for democracy, unity, and what he termed “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”

With expectations now high and scrutiny inevitable, the BJP’s Bengal experiment begins under the weight of both a historic mandate and equally historic promises.
