Overall Election Dynamics

The West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 unfolded in multiple phases across the state, highlighting both the intensity of the political contest and the need for extensive security deployment. At the centre of the battle was the ruling Mamata Banerjee-led All India Trinamool Congress, facing a strong challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party, while the Left–Congress alliance worked to regain relevance in Bengal’s political landscape.

Exit polls pointed to a tightly contested race, with several agencies indicating a slight edge for the BJP, raising the possibility of a significant political shift in the state. However, Mamata Banerjee dismissed these projections, alleging that such exit polls were “aired at the instructions of BJP” and did not accurately reflect the mood on the ground.

Bengal also clocked in its highest ever voter turnout, since Independence, of 92.47% across both phases of elections. The recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll by the election commission added drama to the already fierce competition.

Overall, the dynamics of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 were shaped by a mix of welfare-driven politics and anti-incumbency sentiments, alongside frequent defections between major parties and noticeable regional variations in voter behaviour. These factors combined to make the 2026 contest one of the most closely watched state elections in recent years, carrying significant implications for national politics.
