Rebel BJP MLA from Kurseong, Bishnu Prasad Sharma, on Thursday joined the ruling Trinamool Congress just months ahead of assembly elections. Sharma, who got elected on a BJP ticket in 2021, joined Trinamool in the presence of senior leaders Bratya Basu and Shashi Panja.

"I was being forced to adopt communal politics and raise divisive slogans. A kind of anarchy is going on in the entire country. So, I decided to join Trinamool Congress," he said.

Sharma had differences with BJP over the Gorkhaland issue and had protested in the assembly premises in support of a separate Gorkhaland state. Sharma had been vocal against the BJP leadership for not being serious on the demands of the people.
