Jhalmuri takes over BJP HQ as leaders and workers mark early election trends

BJP headquarters turned into a full-on street food counter of politics and celebration as trends showed the party in the lead, with leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga serving plates of jhalmuri to party workers gathered on the floor.

Speaking to PTI, Bagga said, “This is undoubtedly a victory of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, a victory of Amit Shah’s strategy, and a victory of lakhs of BJP workers... Prime Minister Modi will arrive here to address party workers.”

Inside the headquarters, the symbolism was hard to miss. Jhalmuri -- the simple puffed rice snack often tied to Bengal’s street corners -- became the celebration prop.

The food moment also echoed the party’s earlier campaign optics in Bengal this year, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unscheduled stop in Jhargram and walked up to a small jhalmuri stall during his tour.

That stop had quickly become one of the most talked-about visuals of the campaign. Locals watched as the PM interacted with the vendor, asked for a plate, insisted on paying, and even joked about ingredients while keeping away salt for health reasons.

He later shared the moment on social media, describing the experience during a packed day of rallies across the state, calling the street snack a simple but memorable stop in the middle of campaign chaos.

Seen together, the jhalmuri moments -- one on the campaign trail, another inside the party headquarters -- reflected a familiar political style where food, optics and messaging often blend into the same frame during election highs.

It also fits a pattern seen earlier in 2024, when BJP celebrations in Haryana leaned into food symbolism as well, with party workers and leaders marking results with sweets like jalebi, turning election wins into public, edible metaphors of victory.
