Who will be the next West Bengal CM?
As West Bengal election result trends suggest a BJP victory in West Bengal, the biggest question would be who could be the chief minister in the state. As per the latest trends, the BJP is leading in nearly 200 seats while the TMC is struggling to retain 100 seats. In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not officially projected a chief ministerial face, unlike in states such as Assam. However, as more trends emerge, several leaders have emerged as potential contenders based on political signals and internal party dynamics.

Who would be West Bengal's new Chief Minister? Suvendu Adhikari, The front-runner

Suvendu Adhikari remains the BJP’s most prominent face in the state, buoyed by his high-profile 2021 victory over Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. His continued electoral success has strengthened his claim as a leading contender for the top post. As the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Adhikari has been at the forefront of the BJP’s political strategy in the state. A former Trinamool Congress heavyweight, his switch to the BJP significantly accelerated the party’s rise in Bengal.

Dilip Ghosh, The organisational veteran

Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh continues to wield influence within the party, particularly at the grassroots level. Known for his organisational strength and cadre connect, Ghosh is working to consolidate his position as a key player in the state unit.

Agnimitra Paul, Emerging woman face

Agnimitra Paul has gained prominence as one of the BJP’s leading women figures in Bengal. Her visibility increased during the elections following an alleged attack on her vehicle during polling. An incumbent MLA, she accused TMC workers of being behind the incident and lodged a complaint with local authorities. Her rise reflects the BJP’s push to project more women leaders in the state.

She also secured her seat of Asansol Dakshin for the saffron party.

Papia Adhikari, Urban outreach push

Papia Adhikari has positioned herself as a vocal critic of the TMC government, particularly on issues of urban governance. Her campaign has focused on civic infrastructure gaps and questions around development claims, aligning with the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its urban base.

Swapan Dasgupta, Policy and urban connect

Swapan Dasgupta brings an intellectual and policy-driven edge to the BJP’s campaign. Contesting from the Rashbehari seat, he has focused on issues such as corruption and governance, targeting urban and middle-class voters while attempting to counter the “outsider” narrative.

The X-factor

The BJP has often sprung surprises when it comes to choosing chief ministers, be it Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh, Nayab Singh Saini in Haryana, or Mohan Charan Majhi in Odisha. The party has shown a tendency to back unexpected faces for top roles. Whether a similar strategy will play out in West Bengal remains to be seen.
