West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hit out at her UP counterpart Yogi Adityanath on Thursday without naming him, saying some people pose as monks ahead of elections.

Banerjee's comments came on the day when UP voted in the first phase of the seven-phase assembly election. She also slammed the Centre for removing the hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate in Delhi days after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"Monks are those who live a life of sacrifice and penury like Swami Vivekananda, not those monks who wear a specific attire," Banerjee said, adding that she was shocked at the removal of Netaji's hologram statue.

The hologram statue was turned on again after being switched off temporarily due to extreme weather conditions, according to officials. Banerjee said that despite getting deprived by the Centre, West Bengal has performed much better than UP on all parameters, specially development of the state.
