Union home minister Amit Shah said at a public meeting in western Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday that a Samajwadi Party government would spell an end to development and a return to mafia rule, slamming the main opposition party yet again ahead of the assembly election.

"Akhilesh Yadav (SP chief) will play a game of red light-green light. He will show red light to development and green light to mafias," Shah said in Aligarh.

Shah campaigned in Aligarh, Atrauli and Badayun. His first stop on Wednesday was Atrauli, the bastion of former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh from where Singh's grandson, Sandeep Singh, is contesting for the second time. Shah started his speech by mentioning Singh as his political guru. "When I became the general secretary of UP, I sought time from Babuji (Kalyan Singh) and he taught me UP's politics like a child," he said.
