Prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Indian government was "leaving no stone unturned to rescue" Indians stuck in Ukraine.

Addressing an election rally in Basti, Modi, while pointing to the turmoil prevailing in the world, pitched for strengthening the country by making it self-reliant.

"In these challenging times, India has always given topmost priority to securing the life of every citizen. Where trouble brewed, we left no stone unturned in bringing our citizens back safely. By launching Operation Ganga, we are bringing thousands of Indians back from Ukraine," Modi said in Basti, adding: "The current phase is also giving a big message to India - that India needs to become more powerful and self-reliant. The time is to rise above caste and trivial matters and stand with the nation."

With just two phases of polling left in UP, the PM said "more than nine crore backwards, three crore Dalits and three crore general category families have received free rations" under the PM Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana and the state's free ration distribution scheme. He also said the current elections were between "ghor parivaarvadis and ghanghor rashtrabhakts (chronic dynasts and zealous nationalists)".

Modi also addressed a rally in Deoria later in the day.
