Amit Shah set to take stock of BJP's election preparation in Uttar Pradesh

In the run-up to the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Union home minister Amit Shah is expected to hold a series of meetings with BJP leaders in Lucknow on Friday.

"It is a purely an organisational visit where the home minister would launch BJP's membership drive and hold meetings with party's former and current office-bearers," UP BJP president Swatantra Dev Singh told ET, adding: "We have set a target of adding more than one crore new members. At each booth, we are aiming to add 100 new members."

As per the claims made by the party, the BJP has "2.6 crore members in Uttar Pradesh". Shah will start his UP mission by launching the party's membership drive in Lucknow.


Shah is expected to take feedback from BJP's former Lok Sabha prabharis, and former MPs and MLAs. Thereafter, he would meet the current team and election incharges to get details on preparations for the upcoming assembly polls.

Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP's election incharge for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, and his team of co-incharges are likely to reach Lucknow on Thursday.

The BJP is also planning to start four yatras from four different regions of the state. Senior party leaders may join the yatra at different places. The yatra programme is yet to be finalised.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last week visited Kushinagar, Siddharthnagar and Varanasi - the state's Purvanchal region - to give a fillip to BJP's poll preparations and launch a few projects.
