Telangana: Actress Vijayashanti becomes Congress Chief Coordinator after quitting BJP

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday morning named Telugu-Tamil movie actress Vijayashanti as the Chief Coordinator of the Congress for the Telangana Assembly election.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Saturday morning named Telugu-Tamil movie actress Vijayashanti as the Chief Coordinator of the Congress for the Telangana Assembly election. A much sought-after crowd puller, Vijayashanti, now 57, is expected to widely campaign for the Congress in this election the party is posing a deterimed challenge to the ruling BRS.

Vijayashanti's elevation came just a day after she joined the Congress by resigning from the BJP. Vijayashanti, once famous as the "lady action hero" joined the Congress with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge inducing her into the party at a public function at Hyderabad on Friday.



Her resignation from the BJP came amid reports of her growing unhappiness with the saffron party, in which she served as star campaigner for years. Vijayashanti is the latest in a series of the Telangana BJP leaders to quit and join the Congress.


Vijayashanti once got elected to the Lok Sabha from the BRS. For her, joining the Congress is also a kind of her second innings with the party as she joined the BJP some years ago by quitting the Congress.
