TDP to contest alone in Telangana assembly polls

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will contest the upcoming Telangana assembly elections on its own, ruling out any alliance with other parties in the state, TDP National President N. Chandrababu Naidu revealed during an informal chat with media persons in New Delhi on Tuesday.

"The time is over," the former Andhra Pradesh CM said when asked if TDP would have an alliance with the BJP in Telangana.

TDP has not yet decided whether it will field candidates in all 119 assembly constituencies in Telangana or in a limited number of segments. The party has formed a committee to take a decision in this regard, Naidu said. On being asked about alliance with other parties in Andhra Pradesh, Naidu said alliance would be based on 'need'.


Naidu met with BJP President J.P. Nadda on Monday during the release of a commemorative coin by President Droupadi Murmu to mark the centenary celebrations of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao.

In June, Naidu had also held talks with Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. As per media reports, they discussed about reviving their alliance.

In 2018, the TDP had snapped ties with the BJP, accusing it of going back on its promise to accord special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
