DMK chief MK Stalin is all set to be sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7, marking his party’s return to power after a decade.

Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, Stalin had said the swearing-in ceremony of the new government led by his party would be simple.

On Monday, the outgoing CM EK Palaniswami resigned after his party was unable to retain power after two terms.

The DMK won 125 seats while the AIADMK, led by O Panneerselvam and Palaniswami, won 65 seats in the assembly election.

“I extend my wishes to MK Stalin, who will assume charge as chief minister of Tamil Nadu,” Palaniswami tweeted on Monday.

Stalin responded to his tweet saying, “Need your advice and cooperation to create a better Tamil Nadu. Democracy is a combination of treasury and opposition. Let’s protect democracy.”

He said this while thanking Palaniswami for his good wishes.

Stalin also held consultations with government officials including the health secretary on Monday to review the Covid-19 situation and discuss what could be done to arrest the spread of the infection. He said he urged the officials that preventive measures be taken wholeheartedly and that all people should wear masks, adhere to social distancing and follow the guidelines of the government to help prevent the spread of the disease.

Stalin, while being a seasoned politician and senior leader of the DMK, is becoming CM for the first time. He is expected to take charge in a small ceremony, most likely at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai.

On Sunday, after receiving his certificate of election from election officials in Kolathur constituency, he made his way to his father’s memorial. He paid floral tributes to the late party patriarch ‘Kalaignar’ M Karunanidhi at his memorial at the Marina beach in Chennai.

He vowed to take immediate efforts to implement his party’s electoral promises in a phased manner and also the DMK’s 10-year vision document.
