Actor Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) snapped ties with the AIADMK-BJP alliance on Tuesday, expressing disappointment over the number of seats offered by the AIADMK as part of the seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming assembly election.

The AIADMK “refused to allot the numbers that were sought”, the DMDK said while walking out of the alliance less than a month before the April 6 polls. The DMDK had originally asked for 41 seats, but this was scaled down to 25 and then eventually to 23. However, the AIADMK did not accede, according to people aware of the matter.

Even when talks were being held earlier this month, the DMDK leadership had threatened to contest independently if the need arose.

“The DMDK held rounds of talks for an alliance with AIADMK. Since there was a difference between the demand and the offer, the district secretaries meeting of the DMDK resolved unanimously to walk out of the AIADMK alliance,” Vijayakanth said in a statement.
