While Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO)the apex tribal organisation of eastern Nagaland has threatened to abstain from the assembly polls if its demand of separate state of "Frontier Nagaland, Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) a forum of legislators from Eastern Nagaland has decided to participate in the polls.

The body stated, “In an emergency meeting held on January 22 pertaining to the ENPO resolution to abstain from 14th Nagaland assembly election after a through deliberation the house resolved to participate in the upcoming general election since election has been notified by the Election commission of India on 18th of January, 2023.”

Konyak Union (KU) had decided to refrain from participating in the assembly polls. The union resolved to permanently expel those individual filing nominations to participate in election from the Konyak soil.


ENPO the apex tribal organisation of eastern Nagaland, which is demanding a separate state met the MHA officials, led by A K Mishra recently.

ENPO has threatened to boycott the upcoming assembly polls if their demand is not met. Earlier seven tribes of the area did not participate in the Hornbill Festival.

Seven tribes of Eastern Nagaland, Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Tikhir, Sangtam and Yimkhiung are spread across six districts.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio recently said that the state government cannot allow any constitutional crisis.

He said solution to the protracted Naga Political Issue (NPI) depends on the negotiating parties and the legislators and general people can only put pressure for an early outcome.

Rio said, “Government cannot allow any constitutional crisis and create a law and order problem. Right thinking persons should pursue the issue by the rule.”

Nagaland has 60 assembly seats and Eastern Nagaland accounts for 20 seats. Polls will take place in Nagaland February 27.
