Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Prime minister Narendra wants the next government in Nagaland should be formed under the leadership of Neiphiu Rio so that we can carry on with the development work and bring much needed solution to the Naga political issue.

Sarma, who is convenor of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) while addressing rallies at Pughoboto and Bhandari, said: “Prime minister Narendra Modi wants the next government in Nagaland should be formed under the chief ministership of Neiphiu Rio so that we can continue with the good work of much needed development and political solution to the Naga issue.”

He added, “In next five years we will work to carry forward the development work, resolve the Assam Nagaland border dispute and bring solution to Naga political issues. Prime minister Narendra Modi will visit the state shortly. Union Home minister Amit Shah will also visit the state.”

The BJP- Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is jointly fighting the polls with NDPP contesting in 40 seats and BJP in 20.

Sarma said, “BJP-NDPP Government has established political stability in Nagaland and people will surely give us another mandate.”

Sarma attacked Naga People’s Front (NPF) and said that the party has fielded candidates only in 22 seats while to form a government one requires 30 MLAS in a 60-member assembly. “Before the start of the game it seems NPF has given up. Do you want to be on the losing side and what is the use of voting for a party which has just contested 22 seats?”

In 2021, 21 MLAs joined NDPP and the party was left with only four MLAs. NPF is in alliance with NDPP and together with BJP is running an all-party opposition-less United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government.

Clarifying that BJP has no understanding with Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Assam CM said, “BJP has no links with LJP and some people are spreading rumours. “

LJP is contesting in 19 seats. Talks between the government of India and National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) hangs in a limbo, especially on the issue of a separate flag and constitution. NSCN-IM has been demanding a separate flag and Constitution which the India government had rejected. Separate negotiations have been going on with NSCN-IM since 1997. The Working Committee of Naga National Political Group (NNPG) has concluded talks with the government.

The 60 assembly seats of Nagaland will go for single phase polls on February 27. Counting of votes will be on March 2.
