Mizoram Polls: Zoramthanga steps down as President of Mizo National Front

Guwahati: Zoramthanga on Tuesday resigned as President of the Mizo National Front (MNF).

After the poll results on Monday, Zoramthanga met Governor Hari Babu Kamabhampat and tender his resignation from chief ministership.

In his resignation letter sent to MNF senior vice president Tawnluia, Zoramthanga said he took moral responsibility as the president of the party for its poll debacle.


"The MNF fails to win the state assembly polls. In this regard, I take moral responsibility as party chief. Considering that it is my obligation as the MNF president, I do hereby tender resignation from the president post and kindly request you to accept the same," he said in the letter.

Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) wrested power by securing 27 seats in the 40-member Assembly while ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) would win only 10 seats.

Congress won just one seat while BJP improved its tally from one seat of 2018 to two seats in 2023 assembly polls. Zoramthanga lost to ZPM's Lalthansanga in Aizawl East-1 seat.

The ZPM had won 8 seats in 2018 Assembly polls but lost two seats in subsequent by-polls while retaining the Serchhip seat in 2021 by polls. The MNF had won 28 seats in the 2018 Assembly polls, the Congress five and the BJP one.

Since Mizoram gained statehood in 1986, the state has seen power being shared between the Congress and MNF.

MNF which emerged from Mizo National Famine Front (MNFF) a platform that protested the inaction of Centre during the 1959 famine in Mizo areas of Assam.

The front was led by Laldenga, which staged a militant uprising in 1966 and for several years carried out underground activities. Peace returned to Mizoram following inking of Mizo accord in 1986 under Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
