November 3Ahead of the big fight in 2024 Lok Sabha polls, five key states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Mizoram -- are going for polls this year. Election Commission of India (ECI) today announced that polling in Mizoram will happen on Mizoram 7 and the result will be declared on December 3. The term of the 40-seat Mizoram assembly is coming to end in January.

What happened in 2018 Mizoram elections:

The Mizo National Front (MNF) had managed to win 28 seats with a vote share of 37.8%. The MNF removed the Congress party from power. The main opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has six MLAs, the Congress has five, and the BJP has one.

The voter turnout in the 2018 assembly polls in Mizoram was 81.5 per cent.

Mizoram elections 2023:

The Mizo National Front (MNF) recently announced its candidate list for the 40-member assembly. Chief Minister Zoramthanga is set to run from Aizawl East-I, a seat he secured in the 2018 assembly elections. The MNF will contest in all 40 assembly constituencies. The MNF's candidate list includes two women and 15 new faces.

The state polls are happening in the shadows of recent violence incidents in neighbouring state Manipur. The issue may impact the outcome of state elections in Mizoram.
