EC team has agreed to remove Mizoram CEO: NGO coordination committee chief

This officer is accused of interfering with the poll process.

GUWAHATI/ NEW DELHI: Election commission of India (ECI) team led by Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain held discussion with NGO Coordination Committee of Mizoram and church leaders. The agitating organisation claim that ECI has agreed to replace Chief Electoral Officer (ceo) SB Shashank and Brus residing in Tripura would exercise their franchise in their in Mizoram. Mizoram is going to polls on November 28.

There has been series of protest in poll bound Mizoram. Sources in ECI, who do not want to be named said, “There is strong likelihood that Shashank will be replaced. The full ECI will hold meeting on Saturday. The ECI do not want to take chance for the CEO has lost the confidence of the electorate.”

Vanlalrauta President of Young Mizo Association, which is one organisation spearheading the agitation told ET, “The ECI has assured that CEO will be replaced and Vru voters will cast vote in Mizoram.”


An umbrella organisation of several organisations is seeking removal of Mizoram CEOSB Shashank following removal of the home secretary, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo by the Election commission. This officer is accused of interfering with the poll process. The organisations alleged that Chuaungo was ousted following complaint by Shashank.

Thousands of Bru refuges from Mizoram are staying in Tripura after ethnic clashes of 1997. The clash was triggered after a forest official was killed by Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) militants. Over 32,000 Bru people have been living in six temporary camps in North Tripura district.
