Voting for Meghalaya and Nagaland Assembly elections begins amid tight security
Guwahati: Around 59 assembly constituencies each in Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to polls on Monday. Polls for one seat in Meghalaya has been deferred following the death of a candidate while in Nagaland, BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi was re-elected unopposed from Akuluto constituency after his only opponent and Congress nominee Khekashe Sumi withdrew his candidature. Both Meghalaya and Nagaland have 60 seats each.

Polls in Meghalaya will be held across 3,419 polling stations. There are 369 candidates, including 36 women in the fray. Around 21.75 lakh voters, including 10.92 lakh women, are eligible to exercise their franchise.

Around 13 political parties, including four national parties -- BJP, Congress, National People's Party (NPP) and Trinamool Congress -- are contesting. Polling would not be held in Sohiong constituency in East Khasi Hills district following the death of United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate H Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh. A polling official was killed and four others injured when a vehicle carrying the officials overturned and fell into a deep gorge in West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.


NAGALAND GEARS UP
Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V Shashank Shekhar said that over 11,500 polling staff have reached 2,315 polling stations in 59 assembly constituencies. According to the election officials, around 13 lakh voters, including 6,55,144 women, would decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates, including four women, in Monday's elections. Around 12 political parties, including national and state parties, are in the fray.
