Nameirakpam Loken Singh on Wednesday resigned as Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president taking responsibility for the defeat of party candidates in the recently held assembly elections.

He tendered his resignation a day after Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi asked for the resignations of party chiefs of all five states where polls were held.

“Taking responsibility of the major defeat of the candidates of Indian National Congress in the last 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election, 2022, I do hereby submit my resignation Congress Committee from the presidentship of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) of the INC on moral ground with immediate effect,” said Loken in his resignation letter addressed to the party chief.

Loken, who took charge as party president last year, was defeated by BJP's Basanta Kumar Singh in the assembly polls.

The Congress managed to secure only five seats in the 60-member Manipur assembly. In the 2017 election, it was the largest party with 28 seats.
