Manipur chief minister Nongthombam Biren files nominations from Heingang Constituency

The Manipur assembly polls will be held in two phases. In first phase polling will be held on February 27 in 38 assembly seats and in second phase polling will be held on March 3 in 22 assembly constituencies.

Seeking re-election for fifth consecutive term Manipur chief minister Nongthombam Biren filed his nominations on Saturday from the Heingang Assembly Constituency in Imphal East district.

Biren 61-year-old submitted his candidatures to the Returning officer Elangbam Amuthoi Khanganba accompanied by Manipur state BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi.

Singh tweeted: “It gives me immense pleasure to file the nomination as the BJP candidate from Heingang AC at the Office of Returning Officer today. I was joined by Smt. A Sharda Devi Ji, Pres. BJP Manipur. Best wishes to all BJP candidates filing nominations for the upcoming election.”


Biren resigned from the state assembly and the Congress party in October 2016 and joined the BJP. He was re-elected to the state assembly in 2017 from the same Heingang Assembly Constituency for the fourth time and sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur on March 15, 2017.

Biren was a national level footballer which eventually got him in the Border Security Force (BSF) team which won the Durand Cup in 1981.

After resigning from BSF, Biren started a vernacular newspaper “Naharolg go Thoudang”.

Biren contested assembly polls from Heingang seat and won on Democratic Revolutionary Peoples party ticket. He later joined congress. In 2003 he took charge as Minister of State of Vigilance congress government.

After winning in 2007 he was given charge of Minister of Irrigation & Flood Control and Youth Affairs & Sports in the State.

Manipur Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Agrawal said that the full Election Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra would visit Manipur on February 7 to review the poll preparedness for the ensuing elections to the 12th Manipur Assembly.

The CEO said that the Election Commission would hold a meeting with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Chief Electoral Officer, State Police Nodal Officer, Director General of Assam Rifles, recognised national and state political parties, District Election Officers, Superintendents of Police and Enforcement Agencies.
