Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that BJP will form government in Manipur on its own and does not require any support from any party.

Sarma, who was on a one-day visit to Manipur, when asked about an alliance with the National People's Party (NPP), said that such a coalition is not required as of now.

He said that the BJP is not dependent on any other party this time in Manipur.


“Alliance with the NPP is a factor in Meghalaya, but as far as Manipur is concerned the BJP would form the government on its own. BJP’s primary focus is now on getting a solid majority, rather than looking into the party’s future status with the partners,” he told the media.

Union Minister and BJP’s election in-charge for Manipur Bhupender Yadav also addressed the intellectuals’ meet.

When asked about the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, he said the N. Biren Singh government since 2017 has been ruling the state “successfully” and the party is fighting the elections under his leadership.

“The central election committee of the party after the elections would decide who would be the next Chief Minister," he said.

The Manipur assembly polls will be held in two phases. In first phase polling will be held on February 27 in 38 assembly seats and in second phase polling will be held on March 3 in 22 assembly constituencies.

In 2017 Congress went out of power in Manipur after 15 years of rule. In 2017 assembly polls Congress emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs, Manipur assembly is 60-member assembly. Later around eight Congress MLAs left the party. BJP won 21 seats and it contested all the 60 seats.
