MP gears up for election season

After 15 years of unbroken BJP rule, the Congress hopes to capitalise on anti-incumbency.

In the past 41 years, Madhya Pradesh has seen nine governments, five of which were non-Congress ones.

The Congress-dominated era ended when Janata Party came to power in 1977. After 15 years of unbroken BJP rule, the Congress hopes to capitalise on anti-incumbency.

The state’s electoral history shows people’s participation has improved substantially. While a record number of parties entered the fray in 2013, the number of candidates was highest in 1990.


However, women’s participation in government remains abysmally low, mirroring the national trend.
