Thrissur assembly elections
Kerala’s political fate will be sealed on Monday as counting of votes for the April 9 Assembly elections gets underway, bringing to an end an intense and closely fought contest among the ruling LDF, the opposition UDF and the BJP-led NDA. Located in the cultural heart of Thrissur district, the Thrissur Assembly constituency holds the 67th position among Kerala’s 140 seats and forms a key part of the Thrissur Lok Sabha segment.

A general constituency with a diverse urban electorate of over 2.1 lakh voters—comprising Hindu, Christian and Ezhava communities—it typically records voter turnout in the range of 69–70%. The seat includes Thrissur city, Swaraj Round and surrounding peri-urban areas, reflecting the region’s commercial and cultural vibrancy.

Why is the seat important?

Thrissur has emerged as one of Kerala’s most competitive battlegrounds, witnessing intense three-cornered contests between the UDF, LDF and BJP. In the 2021 Assembly elections, CPI’s P. Balachandran secured a narrow victory with 44,263 votes (34.25%), edging past Congress candidate Padmaja Venugopal, who polled 43,317 votes (33.52%), by just 946 votes. BJP’s Suresh Gopi finished a close third with 40,457 votes (31.30%), underlining the constituency’s sharply divided mandate.

The 2016 election marked a turning point, with CPI’s V.S. Sunilkumar winning decisively with 53,664 votes (42.19%), defeating Padmaja Venugopal by a margin of 6,987 votes. The result signalled a shift from the Congress’s long-standing dominance and highlighted the LDF’s growing urban appeal.

As the state moves towards the 2026 elections, Thrissur remains a crucial bellwether. The contest is expected to hinge on shifting political loyalties, development narratives, minority consolidation and the BJP’s growing influence following Suresh Gopi’s Lok Sabha success. Issues such as the Pooram festival economy, urban infrastructure and community dynamics are likely to shape voter sentiment, making Thrissur a key constituency to watch in Kerala’s evolving political landscape.
