Kochi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said both ruling-LDF and the Opposition UDF were spreading lies about the proposed changes to the foreign contributions (regulation) act, seeking to put fears among Kerala’s Christian community at rest.

The NDA government’s move sparked concerns in the Christian belt of southern Kerala as the state headed to assembly polls on April 9 and the BJP is pulling out all stops to woo the Christian community.

“The LDF and UDF people have become pro at lying…These days, they are spreading lies about the FCRA and UCC,” Modi said after a road show at Thiruvalla town in the Christian-dominated Pattanamthitta district. His comments came amid widespread concern that the proposed changes may create hurdles for the genuine Christian welfare organisations access overseas funds.

Assuring the Christian population that the BJP would not go against the interests, PM Modi said that the NDA formed governments in seven states in the northeast with a significant Christian population. “We have delivered on work that was pending for decades. In Goa too, with a sizeable Christian community, we continue to serve and drive development.” He promised to address the concerns of fishermen and local farmers after forming the government in Keralam.

SABARIMALA LINKED TO CONGRESS

The PM said the ruling LDF has not handed over the Sabarimala temple gold theft case to the CBI raising serious questions. “At the same time, Congress, which has largely stayed away from temple-related issues, is now faking, trying to project itself as pro-Hindu.”

There was a clear pattern in the loot at Sabarimala, Modi said. “They are occurring under LDF rule but are linked to senior Congress leaders. Once an NDA government is formed, a thorough investigation into both LDF and UDF will be ensured, and those found guilty will be punished. Devotees of Swami Ayyappa expect nothing less than justice…The countdown for the departure of the LDF government has begun in Keralam.”
