Located in Ernakulam district, Kalamassery is one of Kerala’s more politically competitive urban constituencies, shaped by its industrial base, migrant workforce, and highly literate population.

V E Abdul Gafoor of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has won the Kalamassery Assembly seat with 80,606 votes, defeating CPI(M) leader and Industries Minister P Rajeev, who secured 64,294 votes, losing by a margin of 16,312 votes.

Kalamassery is a General category seat with a total electorate of 1,95,291 voters, including 94,611 men and 1,00,678 women, according to Election Commission data. The constituency has a literacy rate of 95.68%, as per the 2011 Census. Scheduled Castes account for 11.12% of the population, reflecting its diverse social composition.

According to the Manorama News–C Voter exit poll, the United Democratic Front is projected to dominate Ernakulam district, winning 12–14 of the 14 seats. The ruling Left Democratic Front could be reduced to 0–2 seats.

In Kalamassery, the survey points to a closely fought contest. Industries Minister P Rajeev of CPI(M) is seeking re-election and faces V E Abdul Gafoor of the IUML. The exit poll suggests a narrow edge for Rajeev, while noting that NDA candidate M P Binu’s vote share could influence the final result. The survey was conducted between April 9 and April 24 among 28,848 respondents across Kerala.

As per the Election Commission of India, polling for the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held in a single phase on April 9, 2026, across all 140 constituencies.

Turnout in Kalamassery stood at 80.83% till 7 pm. For reference, it was at 76% in 2021 and 81% in 2016, according to official election data.

Kalamassery Assembly Election Result 2026: Past Results and Trends

Election Commission records show that in 2021, P Rajeev of CPI(M) won the seat by 15,336 votes (9.94%) against V E Abdul Gafoor. In 2016, IUML’s V K Ebrahim Kunju had won the constituency, defeating CPI(M)’s A M Yousaf by around an 8% margin.

At the state level, official results from 2021 show the LDF returned to power with 99 seats, while the UDF secured 41 seats.

Kalamassery Assembly Election Result 2026: Why This Seat Matters

Despite a broader UDF advantage projected in Ernakulam by the Manorama News–C Voter exit poll, Kalamassery remains a key battleground. A win for the LDF here would signal its ability to retain influence in opposition-leaning districts, while a UDF gain would reinforce its dominance in central Kerala.
