Ernakulam Assembly constituency is as urban as it gets — home to an educated and politically aware electorate that tends to look beyond symbolic politics. Widely regarded as the commercial and financial hub of Kerala, the area has a strong presence of IT firms, ports, and business establishments, and plays a key role in shaping the state’s economic and political narrative.

It falls under the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency, which also connects it closely to national-level politics.

A diverse and intelligent voter base

Ernakulam’s voter base is highly urbanised and cosmopolitan. It includes business owners, IT professionals, government employees, traders, and a sizable floating population. Key areas such as central Kochi, Kaloor, and Marine Drive come under this constituency.

There’s a clear mix here—long-time residents as well as a younger, aspirational crowd. With high literacy levels and strong economic exposure, voters tend to focus more on governance and development than rhetoric.

Tough competition for all

Over the years, Ernakulam has emerged as a key battleground between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF). While the UDF has traditionally had the upper hand, contests here are rarely one-sided.

Local issues usually take centre stage—urban flooding, traffic snarls, waste management, rising living costs, and infrastructure gaps are all major talking points during elections.

Past results

In 2021, T. J. Vinod of Congress (UDF) won the seat with 45,930 votes, defeating independent candidate Shaji George by a margin of 10,970 votes.

The UDF has managed to hold on to this seat consistently, reflecting its strong support base among urban voters.

The candidates

This time, Ernakulam is seeing a multi-cornered contest. Sitting MLA T. J. Vinod is back in the fray for the UDF, relying on his track record and connect with voters.

The BJP has fielded P.R. Sivasankar, looking to make inroads into this crucial urban seat. Adding a new dimension to the contest, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Moses H. M., making the race a bit more interesting than usual.
