Gamaliyan Hembrom and Hemant Soren
Hemant Soren, who led the INDIA bloc's campaign, is contesting from Barhait, a stronghold of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the Santhal Pargana division. Having represented this constituency since 2014, he aims to maintain the party’s unbroken dominance in Barhait, which has been in JMM’s hands since 1990. This year, the stakes are especially high after his arrest as Soren seeks a third term from Barhait, facing off against AJSU’s Gamliyel Hembrom, who is contesting on a BJP ticket.

Before the polling, MP Mahua Maji had stated that the BJP was struggling to find a candidate to contest against Chief Minister Hemant Soren in the Barhait assembly seat.

While Barhait has been a key seat for Soren, he had previously shown preference for it over Dumka, which is considered his family’s stronghold. In 2019, Soren resigned from Dumka after securing victory in Barhait, signalling his focus on this constituency.

The other candidates contesting for the seat are Dinesh Soren NCP and JLKM’s Thomas Soren.

However, prior to the polling, MP Mahua Maji had claimed that the saffron party was finding it difficult to field candidate against Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Barhait assembly seat.

Bahrait Voting details

The constituency saw a total voter turnout of 71.2 per cent this polling season.
