J&K Results 2024: Abdullahs hold the ground in Kashmir; Congress fails to breach BJP's Jammu bastion
National Conference-Congress government in J&K will have to brace itself for a tough ride in the coming months. The emergence of BJP as the main Opposition in the first polls after the abrogation of Article 370 and the overwhelming powers vested in the Union Territory's lieutenant governor are likely to create challenges for the new dispensation.

The clamour for giving full statehood may be the starting point for the tussle between the LG and the NC-led government. Deprived of any space for manoeuvre after the dismal performance of those backed by Engineer Rashid, BJP would not want to lose control of the UT by giving it full statehood in the near future. A Delhi-like situation where AAP-led government and the LG are in a constant battle for supremacy is expected in J&K as well.

While NC and Congress ran poll campaigns with the promise for a full statehood, BJP assured granting it when the conditions are conducive, a loose definition that does not set a timeline.

On July 12, 2024, the Union home ministry had given more powers to J&K LG through amendments to the rules under the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019. The LG has overwhelming powers in matters of police, officers of central services like IAS and IPS and in giving sanctions for prosecution. The LG also has powers to appoint the advocate general and law officers as well as in matters related to the anti-corruption bureau.

The LG of J&K, a UT that shares border with Pakistan, is likely to be more assertive than Delhi LG. LG will also have the right to transfer officers. The verdict has also given BJP the heft to project itself as the party espousing the cause of the Jammu division that has alleged step-brotherly treatment by previous governments. While BJP has won 29 seats - all from the Jammu division - its strength will be bolstered by the five nominated members to the assembly who will be chosen by LG.
