The BJP’s assessment that established parties including Congress may play a minimal role in the formation of a government in Jammu and Kashmir is based on the strong showing expected from seven local parties and 32 Independent candidates. Sources told TOI that these Independents and regional parties could hold the deciding influence in the formation of the next government, as the BJP aims to maintain its dominance in the Jammu region and emerge as the single largest party, positioning itself for a second term in government.

BJP denies ties with Engineer Rashid

As per a TOI report, government sources have firmly denied speculation of any covert alliance with Engineer Rashid, refuting claims that he is BJP’s ‘B team’. While Rashid’s bail was secured due to a Supreme Court ruling, which also led to Arvind Kejriwal being granted bail, sources emphasised there is no connection between the BJP and Rashid. "He remains a UAPA detainee, and the government had strongly opposed his bail," a source noted.

Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir and election ban

In response to Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir’s demand to lift its ban, citing that several of its members are contesting elections as Independents, the government has clarified that the ban will remain in place. "The ban on Jamaat is due to their secessionist agenda... and the ban is going to stay," explained a source to TOI.

Security forces vigilant amid recent terror attacks

Recent terror attacks in Jammu have led to increased vigilance among security forces, especially as militants have begun targeting more remote areas. A government source highlighted that security operations have stabilised in over 70% of the terrain where attacks were reported, with 30,000 villagers being trained as defence volunteers and provided with weapons.

Statehood for J&K

Addressing the question of when Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood will be restored, a government official reiterated the promise made in Parliament. While confirming the restoration will happen, the official stated, "The exact timing depends on several factors, including national conditions and the stance of neighbouring countries." Despite this uncertainty, the government emphasised its commitment to democratic processes and its intention to follow through on the restoration of statehood in due course.
