Vadgam: Jignesh Mevani wins the seat again with a narrow margin

Prominent Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has won his Vadgam seat again with a narrow margin of nearly 4,000 votes. Vadgam Assembly constituency, part of Banaskantha district, falls under the Patan Lok Sabha constituency. It is reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes.

Vadgam usually sees a direct fight between the Congress and BJP. In 2017, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, contesting as an Independent, defeated BJP candidate Vijaykumar Chakravarti by 19,696 votes. Congress and AAP candidates did not take part in the contest.

This time Jignesh Mevani contested as a Congress candidate against BJP candidate Manilal Vaghela and Dalpat Bhatiya of the Aam Aadmi Party.


In 2007, Fakir Vaghela of BJP defeated Dolatbhai Parmar of the Congress by a margin of 9,705 votes.

In 2012, Manilal Vaghela of the Congress defeated Fakir Vaghela of BJP by a margin of 21,839 votes.

Ruling BJP looks all set to retain power for the seventh straight term with victory on more than 150 seats out of a total 182 seats in Gujarat, a record not just for the party, but for the state as it demolishes the record set in 1985 when the Congress won 149 seats under the leadership of Madhavsinh Solanki.
