Gujarat Assembly Polls: EC may release poll schedule this week

This week, the Election Commission is expected to release the schedule for the Gujarat Assembly polls. Citing convention followed in 2017, the poll panel had not announced the Gujarat poll schedule when it came out with Himachal Pradesh election dates earlier this month.

The election in HP will be held in a single phase on November 12 and the counting will take place on December 8.

The Commission clearly hinted that Gujarat votes would also be counted on December 8 by keeping the Himachal Pradesh counting date over a month after polling.


While the dates for the two states' polls in 2017 were different, the results were tallied on the same day, December 18.

The EC decided to hold elections in Gujarat as a result of floods after the Himachal election timetable was released.

Assembly elections in Gujarat and HP at least took place concurrently in 1998, 2007 and 2012, according to the EC website.

On February 18, 2023, the term of the 182-member Gujarat legislative assembly comes to an end.
