Congress document lists BJP 'failures' in Gujarat

The Congress on Sunday released a document enumerating the failures of the BJP government in Gujarat, including the recent Morbi Bridge tragedy, which it referred to as a "BJP-created disaster".

A hanging pedestrian bridge in the state collapsed last Sunday evening-within a week of its reopening after repairs--sending the scores of people standing on it into the river below. The official death toll from the accident has risen to 136. A third of those on the bridge are said to have been children.

"It is amply clear that only BJP and its cronies are directly responsible for 136 lives lost in that unfortunate incident," the Congress said in the document, which lists 22 instances of failures and lapses. "The BJP government, adept at shielding the culprits in many such horrible tragedies, is at it again in the Morbi tragedy."


The document alleges that while "Gujarat was one of the brightest stars of the India growth story", after the Congress left office in the state, it "has lost its growth momentum under the successive BJP governments".
