AAP national convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been defeated by BJP’s Parvesh Verma in the New Delhi Assembly seat. After trailing by nearly 4,000 votes following the 11th round of counting. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit secured third place in the contest.

AAP and Congress Rift Comes into Focus

Kejriwal’s defeat is expected to spark fresh debates over the fractured alliance between AAP and Congress within the INDIA bloc. Political analysts suggest that a stronger alliance between the two parties could have impacted the final result, potentially helping Kejriwal retain his seat.

Parvesh Verma’s Political Ascent

Parvesh Verma, a two-time BJP MP who was held back from contesting the last Lok Sabha elections, has emerged as a strong political figure in Delhi. With his victory, he is now being viewed as a potential Chief Ministerial candidate. Verma is expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the coming days, a move that could further solidify his position within the BJP leadership.

AAP’s Decade-Long Rule at Stake

Kejriwal has held the New Delhi seat since 2013, when he defeated Congress veteran and then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, marking the beginning of AAP’s governance in Delhi. His loss, coming minutes after former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia surrendered his contest in Janakpuri, highlights the scale of AAP’s struggle in this election cycle.

BJP’s Strong Performance in Delhi

At 1pm on the day of the results, BJP was leading in 48 out of Delhi’s 70 Assembly constituencies, while AAP was ahead in only 22. The outcome represents a significant shift in voter preference, suggesting a major challenge for AAP in maintaining its political foothold in the capital.

Kejriwal’s loss is being viewed as a major blow to AAP, with political commentators suggesting that the party is facing a deep crisis. The loss is particularly significant as it comes at a time when two of its three most high-profile leaders—Kejriwal and Sisodia—have been jailed in connection with corruption allegations linked to Delhi’s liquor excise policy. Meanwhile, another key leader, Chief Minister Atishi, is also trailing in her constituency. This turn of events has raised questions about AAP’s future and its ability to sustain itself in the coming years.
