Kolkata: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday claimed that JUP founder Humayun Kabir has received half the funding for his mosque modelled on the Babri Masjid from Bangladesh.

Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, claimed Kabir went to Bangladesh on September 28 last year for a week to arrange the funds.

"Kabir has managed 50 per cent of funding for his mosque in Murshidabad's Beldannga from Bangladeshi donors, forces associated with outfits like Jamaat. He is covertly helping the TMC to counter the anti-Mamata Banerjee wave among minorities," Adhikari claimed.

Claiming that Kabir was "the link between Jamat and TMC", he alleged, "Islamic fundamentalists are consolidating bases on both sides of the border between India and Bangladesh. The situation is alarming for Bengali Hindus."

Kabir, who was expelled by the TMC, hit back and claimed Adhikari has lost his sanity, which is "clear from his wild claims".

Confirming that he had indeed visited Bangladesh during that time, Kabir said, "My itinerary is an open book, and there is nothing to hide. I returned to India on October 10 at 5 pm through Malda. If Suvendu Adhikari wants, I can send him my whole travel schedule."

"I can't imagine someone can stoop so low and link my visit to Bangladesh with the Babri Masjid funding, for which people from across India have generously donated, and everything is transparent," he added.

Kabir said he had gone to Bangladesh to meet his friends and relatives.

He said Adhikari must seek a CBI or ED probe to trace the source of funding for the mosque, as well as his visit to Bangladesh.

Kabir laid the foundation stone of the mosque on December 6, the day the Babri Masjid was demolished in Ayodhya.
