Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal lodges FIR over misuse of official letterhead, signature

Guwahati: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has lodged an FIR over misuse of his official letterhead and signature with malafide intent to create political disharmony in the election bound state.

Assam is going to assembly polls early this year. Sonowal said that a forged letter bearing the official letterhead and fake signature of him was circulated on social media to create mistrust and spread blatant falsehood towards nefarious political ends and urged the investigating authority to take appropriate action.

"It has come to our notice that a forged letter bearing the official letterhead and fake signature of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is being circulated by miscreants with malafide intent.


This constitutes a serious criminal offence involving forgery, impersonation, and misuse of official government identity, apparently aimed at spreading misinformation and discrediting a constitutional authority," said the office of Sonowal in a statement.

"An FIR has been lodged in this matter, and law enforcement agencies have been requested to investigate the case on priority and take strict legal action against those responsible," it said.

The fake letter addressed to the BJP National President raised several issues concerning the present BJP government in Assam and requested the party top brass to look for an alternative Chief ministerial face unburdened by controversies and a clean image.

The letter, termed as fake, by Sonowal also raised issues of public anger over the governance, corruption, people's dissatisfaction and public outrage on the ruling party.

The Office of the Union Minister clarified that the said the letter and its contents are completely fake and fabricated.
