Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday said that BJP-led state government has made Assam infiltration, agitation, curfew and corruption free in contrast to the 15 years of Congress rule in which insurgent groups were killing people in the state.

Shah addressed election rallies at Dhemaji, Majuli and Udalguri in the state on Monday. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is seeking re-election from Majuli.

"In 15 years of congress rule insurgent killed people, security forces were killed. Congress did nothing to check the same. In last five years,2000 militants surrendered and mainstreamed. Bodo accord has brought back peace and confidence," Shah said.

Coming down heavily on the Congress-AIUDF alliance, Shah said: “Badruddin Ajmal’s encroachers had encroached Batadrava Than and Kaziranga National park, our government has cleared the same from encroachments. Now how will Rahul Gandhi save Assam from infiltration when Ajmal is sitting in his lap?”

Batadrava Than is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev, the 15th century saint-reformer of Assam.

He said also that the Congress divided the people and created rift between Assamese and Bengalis, plains and hills and Upper and Lower Assam.

Meanwhile, BJP president JP Nadda mocked the Congress, saying that the grand-old party was like an elephant which has two sets of teeth – "one to show off and another to chew."

Nadda, who held election rallies in tea-tribe dominated assembly constituencies of Tingkhong, Titabor and Behali assembly, also said that the Congress has hurt the culture of Assam.

"It never gave importance to security, which is why the state's problems kept piling on . Congress hindered Assam's development. During Bodoland protests, many were killed and kidnapped, infiltration had increased at the border at that time," he said.

The BJP national president also accused the Congress of practicing politics of opportunism.

"They are with the Muslim League and fighting against the CPI(M) in Kerala, but joined hands with it in West Bengal and Assam,” he said.

He said that Congress did nothing for development of tea tribes and protection of Namghars (Vaishnavite place of worship) and ending violence.
